True Story: My Beautycounter Flawless in Five got stolen!!!  I usually do my makeup in the car and I leave my makeup bag in the glove box.  I know, I know.  You’re probably thinking, “You leave your makeup in the car?!”  What can I say? I’m a gangster. My “mom bag” feels like I must have taken Mary Poppin’s bag by mistake.  It’s so full of stuff!  The glove box is my desperate attempt to lighten the load–but I digress.  My makeup got stolen!!!  It was sad but I’m fine now. Here’s my totally honest review of Beautycounter Flawless in Five Makeup.

Why Beautycounter?

Safer Makeup

It wasn’t just that my makeup got stolen (around $600 in makeup BTW) but it was also the fact that it was my Beautycounter makeup.  I discovered Beautycounter a couple of years ago while reading a health blog and after my first order I was hooked.  I had been looking for ways to get safer beauty products and found myself addicted to this brand. I’d spent a couple years, amassing a large amount of this better beauty goodness, so it was a real bummer that it got stolen.

If you know anything about Beautycounter, you know it isn’t cheap.  I get it.  It takes work to make a product line that is non-toxic and performs as well as any other luxuriant beauty product on the market.  It’s like trying to replicate a gourmet dish but making it gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free.  It can be done.  It just takes work.  Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.  They are committed to health and safety standards above and beyond those required by US law.  They have banned the use of more than 1500 questionable or harmful chemicals through their “Never List” –all while ensuring that their products perform and are as indulgent as any other luxe beauty product out there.  That is a tall order.  So how does Beautycounter Flawless in Five stack up?  Let’s find out.

Beautycounter Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation

This lightweight, creamy foundation is a Beautycounter Best Seller.  It can be layered to create the level of coverage you desire.  It is formulated with hyaluronate, which promotes smoother-looking skin and hides fine lines and wrinkles.  According to Beautycounter, for a sheer look this foundation should be applied with the retractable brush, and for medium coverage, apply with the Flat Complexion Brush.  Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation comes in eight blendable shades, each designed with a diverse range of skin tones in mind.

Beautycounter Touchup Skin Concealer Pen

My Flawless in Five Beautycounter Makeup Review

Since there are six products in the Flawless in Five Set, I will be doing a review of each of the the products within the set.  Feel free to jump ahead if you are interested in a specific product review.

Beautycounter Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation Review

This is one of my favorite Beautycounter products.  I used the color Honey.  I love that it layers beautifully.  It goes on smoothly and it lasts for a long time.  It provides great coverage.  It gave me a very natural glow.  The sodium hyaluronate seems to help reduce the appearance of fine lines.  I also noticed that it keeps my skin looking smooth and moist.  I noticed that it covered up the redness on my skin very well.

According to Beautycounter, if you use their retractable brush, it will give you the lightest coverage.  I found this to be true.  The result is a light, very natural look.  I prefer a little bit more coverage.  To achieve that look Beautycounter recommends their flat complexion brush.  I found that a contour brush does the job nicely.  I think the key is to find a brush that doesn’t absorb the product and spreads it out evenly.  Overall, I love this foundation.  The one thing that could be improved upon is the smell.  It doesn’t really have one.

Beautycounter Touchup Skin Concealer Pen Review

I used the Beautycounter Touchup Skin Concealer Pen in Light.  I like the sleek design of the pen.  I like that the clicker keeps things neat.  I think it provides a good amount of coverage.  I like that it helps to minimize redness and is easy to apply.  It’s like having a little paint brush.  Just click and paint over blemishes and redness and dark circles.  However, I did notice that after a while it can look a little chalky.  It might just be me.  Also, I noticed that my eyes water a little when I get it too close to my tear ducts.  I mean, again that could just be me.  I’ve been told that concealer doesn’t need to be applied so close to the lash line because you can always blend upward later.  I noticed that it was able to hide the breakout on my nose and chin well.  It also got rid of any darkness under my eyes.  Overall, I like the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen.  It definitely has its good points and it gets the job done.

Beautycounter Color Define Brow Pencil Review

I used the Beautycounter Color Define Brow Pencil in Dark.  If you are used to using a brow pencil this one is pretty good.  Because it has a wax base, you kind of have to warm it up in order for it to go on easily.  Some people blow on it.  Others rub it on the back of their hand until it warms up.  I find this to be a bit inconvenient.  I also noticed that some of my eye brow hairs come out every time I use it.  This is a real problem for me since I already have sparse eye brows to begin with.  Overall, it is not my favorite.  I prefer a powder–even if it does take longer.  And it is a pencil so you have to sharpen it.  Sad face.

Beautycounter Lengthening or Volumizing Mascara Review

I used Beautycounter Lengthening Mascara this time around but I have used both.  The applicator is thin which I appreciate.  It helps when you want to go over individual lashes with the brush to add additional length.  The formulation itself seems a bit dry.  The look is very natural and subtle.  I do like the lengthening mascara for everyday use.  The Volumizing Mascara goes on quite wet.  It does add volume but I felt like you needed at least two coats to really see any drama.  One coat was good for everyday wear.  Overall, I feel like the Volumizing Mascara is a better bang for your buck.  It is good for everyday use and can be layered for extra volume.  I also like the Lengthening Mascara.  It looks very natural.

Beautycounter Powder Blush Duo Review

I used the Beautycounter Powder Blush Duo Tawny/Whisper.  The colors are beautiful.  The blush goes on easily and it is not over pigmented.  I like that it feels and looks smooth.  It doesn’t give you too much color.  I think that’s a good thing.  It would be really bad to have to figure out how to get less blush on once its on.  I also like that it comes in a biodegradable container. Tawny can definitely double as a contour shade.  Bonus!  Overall, this is an easy win.  This is a great blush product.

Beautycounter Lip Gloss Review

Beautycounter Lip Gloss is one of my favorite BC products.  I love a good gloss.  One of the most important things I look for in a gloss is that it isn’t sticky or too thick.  Ideally, it should go on smooth and stay put.  This lip gloss does all that and smells really nice, too.  It is scented with real vanilla.  Always a winning smell in my book.  The applicator is tear shaped.  I like this because you can really get that cupid’s bow and every other area with no problem.  Overall, I love Beautycounter Lip Gloss and I would highly recommend it.

What Other People Have to Say About Flawless in Five Set

Beautycounter customer Meredith H. says she loves the Tint Skin Foundation and added:

I’ve been using this for about year now. I love the full coverage it gives without looking caked on. It gives my skin the perfect about of color and shine.
Alecia R. had plenty of good things to say about the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen saying:
Seriously love this touch up pen! At first I thought it was too lightweight for what I’m used to, but after I started using it… I fell in love! It makes my under eyes feel light, soft, and covers dark circles without looking cakey! Highly recommend this product!
Andrea P. says the Color Define Brow Pencil works great and adds:
Blends in perfectly. Looks natural. Defines beautifully. Easy to apply. Love the brow brush that comes with it. I use the medium shade. Can’t ask for more. (It does not, however, reign in any unruly brow hairs, but that is not its purpose either.)
Kathy Y had this to say about the Volumizing Mascara:
This is the first mascara I have found that doesn’t irritate my eyes- and it looks great too!
Ginny N. admires the beautiful colors of the Powder Blush Duo and says:
This blush is so pretty. Goes on easy and stays put all day. Feels light! Wanting to get another.
Devorah N. describes it as the best lip gloss saying:

Getting all my makeup stolen got me thinking about what makeup I’d really have to replace.  I like the idea of having a set of minimalist makeup products.  The Flawless in Five Set includes what I’ve deemed to be essential makeup must-haves.  The look created is both natural and healthy looking.  I love that these products and I like the price point.  And while some of the products aren’t my favorite, I still appreciate all that this set has to offer.
