I’m not a professional makeup artist but I do love to put on makeup. I can spend hours watching makeup tutorials on YouTube and Instagram. I find that it relaxes me. The best makeup artist I ever met in Honolulu was a woman who worked at Macy’s Down Town. She was amazing. Mom and I had gone in to get some free mini makeup demos and purchase some makeup. What she did was magical. I felt so beautiful. A good makeup artist will make you feel like this.
I would’ve bought anything she tried to sell me at that point. I wanted to take her with me. I wanted her to do my makeup all the time. Alas, she was loyal to her employers and could not be persuaded to leave. Lol. It was probably a good call on her part.
It’s been years since I went in and got my makeup done professionally. Nowadays, you just type in tutorial and you can find any number of makeup videos for any number of looks. Sometimes, I just put all my makeup out in front of me, play a video and repeat. There’s really little need for a makeup artist at this point. I will say this, though, a good set of makeup brushes and a lot of quality makeup can make all the difference.
Hair and Makeup
Have you ever gone onto Pinterest and tried to copy a hairstyle that went wrong? That’s never happened to me. It always turns out exactly like the picture….yeah right. Every now and then, I get tired of my messy bun or run-of-the-mill pony tail and opt for something a little more…interesting. I can always count on Pinterest for that. The main thing is to start of with clean, healthy hair. If you don’t have that, well, there’s not much a fancy up-do can do about it. I find that the best way to get healthy hair is to use healthy hair products. I like my hair products to be non-toxic, sulfate and paraben-free and color-safe. As I said earlier, I am not a professional makeup artist. Because we have such a large tourist industry, and many people decide to get married here in Hawaii, there are plenty of wonderful makeup artists. I do sell makeup. It’s probably some of the safest makeup on the market today. When you think about makeup, you probably don’t really think about safety. And yet, in the average woman’s lifetime she will consume 9 pounds of lipstick. Many lipsticks on the market today contain lead. Super toxic. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You don’t even want to know what’s in mascara. Yikes!
I hope this gets your attention. Makeup is one of those things that isn’t essential and yet we use it everyday without batting an eyelash. We don’t even stop to consider the fact that the Beauty Industry as it is today is largely unregulated with little oversight. This means that companies have the choice to care about your well-being or to care about lining their pockets. I don’t think I have to tell which option most companies go with.
